Oil and Gas industry – an investment opportunity in New Zealand

The Taranaki Basin is New Zealand’s premier Oil and Gas exploration region with about 11 petroleum mining licenses or permits fields. The production and use of Hydrocarbons in New Zealand only became significant in the 1960s in terms of the country’s economy and its fuel needs. A BP 2008 Statistical Energy Survey established that New Zealand consumed an average of 151.03 barrels a day. Over 80% of New Zealand’s Oil and Gas comes from the Maui and Kapuni fields. Another BP Statistical Energy Survey of 2007 reported that the country had a natural gas production of 4.01m³ billion and the consumption stood at 3.74 billion cubic metres.

Major industry players include companies such as Shell, NZ Oil and Gas, a wellington based petroleum and mineral exploration company with permits in the Taranaki basin and coking deposits in the Paparoa mountain range; Powerco, 100% public listed company, the second largest gas and electricity company with further operations in Tasmania and Australia, and the Auckland Gas company that provides gas for residential or commercial customers in the Auckland region and is a fervent competitor having been in the market for quite a long time.

The petroleum products industry in New Zealand consists of five companies: British Petroleum (BP), Chevron (marketing as Caltex), Mobil (an affiliate of ExxonMobil), Shell and Gull. BP, Caltex, Mobil and Shell dominate the market and supply a full range of products. Gull has a smaller market share and has limited its participation to petrol and diesel sales. Gull was the first oil company to offer biofuels in New Zealand; a blend of premium petrol (90%) and bio-ethanol (10%) is available at many of its retail outlets. Mobil has now also entered the bio-fuel market in New Zealand. It now offers regular and premium petrol blended with bio-ethanol, and a 5% bio-diesel blend at a few of its retail outlets.

This month, the Economic Development Ministry in New Zealand granted ROC Oil ltd. and its joint venture partners exploration permit PEP52181. Located offshore Taranaki, the permit contains the Kaheru prospect and is on trend with the Rimu Oil and Gas fields and Kauri gas and condensate field. The prospect has 3D seismic coverage and the agreed work program for the five year term includes an exploration well (Kaheru-1) in year three. ROC will operate the 171.5km² permit with other participating interests as ROC Oil (NZ-operated) – 50%; Mighty River Power and Gas Investments- 20%, L&M Energy- 15% and Mosaic Oil NL- 15%.

Oil Prices Approach Historic High

]]>

It has been announced that British Petroleum had to shut down an Alaskan oil field providing 8% of US crude oil production. Oil prices on the world market immediately surged to within pennies of their all-time high. What’s really going on? For an answer I look back to former President Richard Nixon. Privately Nixon who was smart, and as shrewd a man as any President in history use to talk to his friends about if there is a dollar to be made somewhere, than somebody is making it.

It does seem strange that for two consecutive years, the large multinational oil companies have had greater earnings, and free cash flow than in any period in history. At the same time, giant British Petroleum is clueless that they have corroded pipes that are about to take down 8% of America’s oil production. There is a dis-connect here of massive proportions, and nobody is thinking about it.

We all know the airlines are suffering. When you are hemorrhaging money, and the revenue just isn’t coming in, it’s really tough for a company financially to maintain the maintenance programs that are vital to keep an airplane flying. This however is not the situation that British Petroleum or the other major multinationals find themselves in. The oil companies are PRINTING MONEY. They don’t call oil “BLACK GOLD” for nothing.

Why would any oil company choose to skimp on maintenance? Why would BP be this dumb in their managerial policies? They have allowed a massive, and important pipeline to experience corrosion to the point where it has to be shut down? Listen up, when airlines fly a 747 airplane; each and every plane has to have its oil changed every so many miles or hours. The engines have to taken off the plane, and rebuilt every so many miles or flight hours. This is why planes are far more reliable than cars. The airlines make sure that this maintenance gets done or the Federal Aviation Agency will shut them down, no questions asked.

The President of the United States tours the world in Air Force One, which is a glorified version of a 747. The President actually has two of these planes identical to one another.

The President’s planes are put on what’s called a “White Glove” maintenance program. What this means is that the manufacturer, in this case Boeing wants the oil changed, and the engines ripped down every so flight hours. There are also scores of other items that must be done as well. Whatever the schedule is for whatever procedure, White Glove maintenance means the schedule is chopped in half. If Boeing wants an engine ripped apart every 500 hours, for Air Force One it’s every 250 hours.

What’s British Petroleum’s excuse for not maintaining the pipeline in a period of unprecedented earnings power, and monstrous unrestricted FREE CASH FLOW? It’s certainly not stupidity. I have been involved with oil and oil stocks since 1978, and I am telling you that the people in the oil business are some of the smartest people on earth. Do you know how much oil a supertanker holds? These tankers can hold up to 2 million barrels (that’s barrels, not gallons) of oil. The typical loss or spillage loading, and unloading a 2 million barrel tanker is no more than ONE TEASPOON of crude, that’s how efficient these processes are.

It is unthinkable that a modern management team would allow a segment of the Alaskan pipeline to corrode. Corrosion is like metal fatigue in a helicopter. You don’t wait for metal fatigue to become critical before dealing with replacing parts on helicopters. Today’s chemical engineers know exactly how long it takes a pipe to corrode. The oil industry has more PhD chemical engineers than any industry on earth, and these guys are not asleep at the switch. It is up to you the reader to figure out how this happened, or could have been permitted to happen?

Oil is priced at the margin. This means, today’s price is determined by the price of the last barrel that needs to be sold. It is not an average price, it is a marginal price. We are right now at the cusp of where demand equals supply. Even if you could bring another ten million barrels onto the market daily, we don’t have the refining capacity to refine it. The last refinery in this country was built in the 1970′s.

The Wall Street Journal reported in its cover story of August 8, 2006, that the oil industry “….has been stymied in putting in ….new refineries, by intense public opposition”. This is absolutely untrue. I have not met an oil man (including CEO’s of the majors) in the last ten years, who has expressed any interest whatsoever in creating a new refinery in this country. Big oil doesn’t want to create new refineries.

As far as our leadership in Washington DC is concerned, this country has not had an oil policy in 30 years, thank you very much. If anything, America’s policies on oil, have been dictated by oil lobbyists paid to do oil’s bidding. The oil companies are not responsible for the high price of oil. OPEC sets the price, and big oil just tacks on their piece, and oh what a piece.

BP Parody/Satire: British Petroleum’s CEO Tony Hayward defends BP’s role in “tiny leak” in Gulf of Mexico, according to this exclusive coverage of a press briefing by BP Spokesperson Kevin Nalts. Hayward, who remains CEO as of this evening’s press conference, is faring well despite the impact on him emotionally and financially. However BP is taking full responsibility for the event, despite the fact that petroleum is a natural element that might likely leak into the ocean under other circumstances. For more, see this account (not mine) www.twitter.com ** Note: No permission required to use clip. Public domain & satire/parody. Original script (cut and wandered from it yesterday): I’m Kevin Nalts, BP Spokesperson. I’d like to make a brief statement on behalf of BP CEO Tony Hayward. These statements will be documented through wall posts we upload on our Twitter account: BPGlobalPR. For those of you new to “Bitty Spill” (also called “Deepwater Horizon” by those not employed by BP)… a tiny amount of natural liquid petroleum found naturally on planet Earth is leaking into the Gulf of Mexico. We at BP accept full accountability for this unfortunate situation because we happen to be drilling near the location… we wish not to blame the planet, the government’s lack of oversight, or the good people of New Orleans who GOD knows have already faced enough I’m sure we’d agree. We don’t even blame Halliburton, who built the well casing, or Transocean who owns it… with BP just

International Security and Its Influence on Fuel and Energy Complex of Caspian Region

Fuel and Energy Complex covers the sphere of mining and production of energy resources, processing, delivery and consumption of all types of energy. FEC of Caspian region that includes all Central Asia, Caucasus and Caspian Sea adjoining regions of Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran is pretty well developed and includes oil and gas industries, power industry grounding of thermal and hydroelectric power plants, and also a great number of coal and natural uranium fields in development.

Fuel and Energy Complex (FEC) covers the sphere of mining and production of energy resources, processing, delivery and consumption of all types of energy. FEC of Caspian region that includes all Central Asia, Caucasus and Caspian Sea adjoining regions of Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) is pretty well developed and includes oil and gas industries, power industry grounding of thermal and hydroelectric power plants, and also a great number of coal and natural uranium fields in development.

It’s almost impossible to cover all the range of issues referring to the promotion of regional FEC that is why we’ll overview only the problems of mining and transporting of raw hydrocarbons. In many aspects the solution of these problems are determined by the reached level of international and regional security.

It’s widely known that Caspian Sea and surrounding areas possess significant stocks of raw hydrocarbons. According to the evaluations of Russian and foreign experts forecast resources of oil are 15-22 billion tons, of gas – 12-18 trillion cubic meters, and proven stocks: 8,4 billion tons of oil (5,8% of the world reserves) and 7,4 trillion cubic meters of natural gas (about 5% of world reserves). A sufficient part of proven oil stocks belongs to Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan then follows Russia and Turkmenistan. The main part of proven stocks of natural gas in the given region belongs to Turkmenistan (2,9 trillion cubic meters) and Russian part of Caspian region (2,5 trillion cubic meters). Except for that sufficient gas stocks were found in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, and also in Uzbekistan that doesn’t have access to Caspian Sea.

In Caspian region Kazakhstan has a leading role in the quantity of oil production and its proven stocks. The second and third places in oil production rank for Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. The main gas fields explorer is Turkmenistan, the second and third places in natural gas production rank for Kazakhstan and Russia. Iran doesn’t produce raw hydrocarbons in Caspian region, although it is already constructing oil platforms.

Naturally, Caspian oil and natural gas can’t become an alternative to the corresponding supplies from Persian Gulf region, as Saudi Arabia possesses a fourth part of world oil stocks. But they can stabilize general situation within this market that beyond doubts will positively affect the development of global economy and will reduce its dependence from OPEC states or Russia.

Economic well-being of Caspian raw hydrocarbons exporting countries (Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Russia, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan) greatly depends on corresponding world prices. Within conditions of deep global economic crisis the demand on oil and natural gas has reduced and this is one of the reasons for preserving relatively small prices (for example, about 50 dollars for a barrel of crude oil). At the same time, the EU is still highly interested in diversification of this raw material flows, especially after another gas conflict between the Russian Federation and Ukraine in the beginning of 2009.

Except for that Europe considers that oil reserves of North Sea can deplete in 10-15 years, that has already increased the share of Caspian oil from 1 to 7% within total energy consumption in Germany in recent years. This is also required by the demand to preserve and develop own oil-production industry. As a result, such companies as Statoil (Norway, Sweden), British Petroleum (Great Britain), Total (France) and Eni (Italy) extend their activity within Caspian region.

Together with these exporting countries, a number of states of the given region act as transiting countries of raw hydrocarbons. Particularly, Georgia that has almost no own stocks of oil and natural gas is vitally interested in the transit of Caspian energy resources by oil pipelines Baku-Supsa and Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan, and also by the gas pipeline Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum. Azerbaijan is also interested in the transit of raw hydrocarbons as it would like to become a kind of gates to Europe for Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

However, the main flow of Caspian oil and natural gas goes through the Russian Federation. Particularly, the most powerful of existing regional oil pipelines lays within the territory of Russia – the pipeline of Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC). The pipeline connects Western Kazakhstani fields, including such big as Tengiz, with Russian harbor of Novorossisk. At first its capacity comprised 28 million tons of oil per year, 22 million tons of which were of Caspian origin. By now, the capacity has increased up to 33 million tons.

The Russian Federation has an extended system of oil and gas pipelines, laid already during Soviet times and oriented mostly on export.

And in 2009 it is planned to start the construction of Caspian regional gas pipeline that will lie along the territory of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Russia. Up to 20 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually will be transported by this pipeline from Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan.

IRI also plans to become a transiting state, for example, of Turkmen natural gas. At the moment Teheran purchases annually from this country for its own facilities more than 8 billion cubic meters of gas. In case of increase of supplies and establishment of corresponding infrastructure gas could be delivered to Europe (which is the shortest way of transportation) and South Asia.

In addition, Teheran is interested in extension of so-called operations of SWAP, when supplied oil from Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to Caspian harbor Neka (IRI) is substituted for equivalent quantity of Iranian oil from harbors of Persian Gulf.

Now this transit hardly exceeds 100 thousand barrels a day, but there is a potential tp increase the capacity up to 1 million barrels.

The same could be made with Russian or Kazakh natural gas that could be supplied though the territory of Azerbaijan.

After the description of the situation in the sphere of mining and transporting of raw hydrocarbons in Caspian region, we can move forward to review its interconnections with the level of international security. A demonstrative example of the last is IRI that has a paradoxical situation within gas sphere. Holding the second position in the world in supplies of natural gas (16% of the world), Iran in practice has no sufficient export capacity. Iranian gas is exported only in Turkey (1,1 billion cubic meters per year). At the same time it purchases natural gas from Turkmenistan, and supplies of the gas to Armenia are accompanied by counter supplies of electric power (about 3,3 billion kW/h). Mostly, it is due to extremely tensed relations between IRI and West in security sphere. As a result, the extremely important flow of investments and modern technologies into Iranian gas industry is mostly blocked. Implicitly even materials are banned if they can be used within nuclear or missile engineering sphere.

But international (regional) security mainly influences the ways of transportation of raw hydrocarbons due to the high cost of main oil and gas pipelines. The payback of such projects is pretty long-term, that is why as a rule investors don’t participate in them by serious risks in the security sphere.

Let us demonstrate this conclusion by two examples.

In 1995 former president of Turkmenistan Saparmurat Niyazov and former Prime-Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto signed an Agreement on the development of technical and economic assessment of Trans-Afghan gas pipeline which was planned to deliver gas from Turkmen field Dovletabad (the stocks are estimated from 1,7 up to 4,5 trillion cubic meters of gas) to South Asia. Later calculations demonstrated that the total length of the pipeline would be 1680 km, (within the territory of Turkmenistan – 170 km, within Afghanistan – 830 km, and within Pakistan – about 400 km). The amount of project was estimated in 4 billion dollars by annual capacity up to 30 billion cubic meters a year.

At the same time The USA had no compelling contradictions with ruling Taliban in Afghanistan, that is why already in October 1995 Turkmenistan, American company Unocal and Saudi Arabia Delta Oil Co signed a contract on construction of Trans-Afghan gas pipeline.

Then it was signed an agreement on construction of oil pipeline with project capacity up to 259 million tons of oil annually parallel to the gas pipeline. However, later an issue on oil transportation, Kazakhstan oil primarily, was suspended for indefinite period.

In 1997 the International Consortium Central Asia Gas Pipeline, Ltd. (CentGas) was established for the accomplishment of the contract. It included Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Unocal, INPEX and ITOCHO Oil Exploration Co. Ltd. (Japan) and Hyundai Engineering & Conctruction Co, Ltd. (South Korea). However, in 1998 talibs granted a shelter to the leader of Islamic terrorist organization “Al-Qaeda” Osama Ben Laden. As a result the fundamental American company Unocal had to withdraw from the Consortium.

Trans-Afghan gas pipeline got the “second breath” already after the defeat of talibs in the spring of 2002, when during the meeting of leaders of Turkmenistan, Pakistan and Afghanistan a new Agreement on Trans-Afghan gas pipeline construction was signed again. Asian Bank of Development sponsored designing of technical and economic assessment, and in 2006 India joined the project as an observer. But the fulfilment of the project has never started due an extremely grave security situation in Afghanistan and in Pakistani Belujistan, and also due to the refusal of Delhi, one of the main investors, to become depended from Islamabad.

The second example is the situation around accomplishment of Nabucco project – main gas pipeline from Central Asia to the EU countries. Its length can comprise up to 3,3 thousand kilometers, and the project capacity – 31 billion cubic meters annually. Consortium on gas pipeline construction includes the following companies: OMV Gas GmbH (Austria), BOTAS (Turkey), Bulgargaz (Bulgaria), S.N.T.G.N. Transgaz S.A. (Romania), MOL Natural Gas Transmission Company Ltd. (Hungary) and RWE AG (Germany).

In 2004 the project of Nabucco gas pipeline was designed to deliver gas from Iranian field “South Pars” (which influenced its name). However, as Iranian nuclear problem aggravated, Kazakhstan and Turkmen fields have been considered as main sources of natural gas, which was planned to deliver into Azerbaijan along the bed of Caspian Sea by Trans-Caspian pipeline. But here also was a serious problem rooted in the uncertainty of the status of Caspian Sea.

In 2002 Russia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan managed to agree on dividing the Northern part of Caspian region into national sectors. Its Southern part remain integrate. And after Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov came to power in Ashkhabad Turkmen-Azerbaijani relations started improving and the compromise on the Sea status became more real, then Iran with only 11% of Caspian coast still insists on 20% by the partition of Caspian Sea. This resulted into an armed conflict on sea (2002) between Azerbaijan and Iran, when Iranian military ships impeded the exploration of hydrocarbon stocks within high-potential fields “Araz”, “Alov” and “Sharg” in the southern part of Caspian Sea and forced the exploring ship to leave the area.

Later the exploration of these fields has never proceeded.

Objectively, neither Moscow nor Teheran is interested in the resolving of the problem of Caspian Sea status. The both states oppose against third countries military presence in Caspian region, primarily the USA. They also try to reduce the influence of West within the region. At the same time Teheran actively promotes ecologic problems of the unique marine and land flora and fauna in Caspian region.

In general we should acknowledge that the probability of Nabucco accomplishment is still low, and this is caused not only by the uncertainty of Caspian Sea status, but also by the absence of significant additional exporting possibilities of Central Asia states considering the construction of Caspian regional gas pipeline. Moreover, at the moment Turkey and Azerbaijan have suspended its participation in this project as tragic events of August 2008 in Caucasus revealed the risks in South Caucasus in transporting of raw hydrocarbons, due to uncontrolled conflicts of Georgia with Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Thus, the state of international (regional) security sufficiently affects production of oil and natural gas in Caspian region. It also influences the ways of delivery. The situation aggravates due to uncertainty of Caspian status and due to intensive activity of such non-regional players as the USA, China, the EU, Japan and Turkey. Until now military and political positions of Russia have been firm in Caspian region, and this allows accomplishing here their own national interests in association with Iran.

However, further, as the influence of West gains power, Moscow will have to cooperate with it, and first of all to preserve here internal stability and to assure the demanded security level.

How Will the BP Oil Spill Affect the Economy In the Near Future? What Does It Mean To The “Average Joe”?

]]>

According the recent report done by the US scientists, they estimated that the BP oil spill incident in the Gulf of Mexico is the biggest oil disaster in the world. Up to date, as many as 174 million gallons of oil have been spilled. This Deep Horizon Disaster has badly affected the ecosystem of the Gulf region and many people have been suffering from financial difficulties. This unfortunate incident has actually brought a lot of negative impacts to the global economy.

Let’s see what will happen in the near future?

According to the previous statistics, the Gulf fishing and tourism industries produced an average annual income of .5-.5 billion for the past few years. Right after the oil spill incident, the annual income for the year of 2010 has been reduced dramatically. The sea water has been contaminated and most of the marine lives were killed. The fishing industry is considered “dead” at the moment because nobody dares to eat seafood in the Gulf region. The seafood wholesalers have suffered huge losses. The environmental damages have great potential to wreck the local economy.

Same thing happens to the tourism industry. Almost all the tourists who have planned to spend their summer at the Gulf of Mexico cancelled their vacation right after the oil leak. They are not willing to waste their time at the tourist spots because in their opinion, the sea hasn’t been cleaned up completely and the beaches are no longer safe. The hotels in coastal cities have not received bookings since April 2010. Although BP has allocated billion to compensate the affected victims, these people are not able to survive in the long run. It may take years for the residents and business owners to recover from this crisis. They have to put in extra hard effort to look for other job opportunities.

We are able to see some direct effects on certain industries. It is also time for us to take a look at the “Average Joe” and anticipate some worse scenarios in the coming future. We talk about the prices for the oil and gas. Although there is no price increment after the oil spill incident, it doesn’t mean that we have sufficient supply in the near future and the prices will remain the same. We should not be too happy now. Many financial experts estimate that the fuel prices will increase after winter. Are you ready to pay more for the petrol? Next, we look at the stock market. The market is uncertain and it is getting harder to predict the movements. The effects of global economy downturn are still there and there is no obvious improvement.

Do all Americans concern about risk management? The Deepwater Horizon Disaster is considered a “wake up call” for Americans to pay full attention on the economy. We should take proactive action to prevent ourselves from becoming the victims of the recession. Now, looking for alternate income sources is a must.

A claims adjuster is often the first person that you talk to at an insurance agency about your personal injury.

The Benefits of Litigation Funding Companies

State and federal laws allow people that have been injured, in no fault of their own, to obtain monetary damages for that injury. Unfortunately, many plaintiffs have to take part in costly litigation to get any damages from the person that hurt them. Plaintiffs may find it difficult to pay for their medical bills and litigation costs, especially with possible lost wages and other costs associated to their injury.

Things to Avoid in Gas Reward Credit Cards

Gas reward credit cards are great but the truth is they’re not really for everyone. Usually, this type of reward credit card is affiliated with a particular gas station, and if you don’t purchase your gas from that station, then you won’t earn your points at all. So before you go ahead and sign up for that amazing gas rewards credit card offer, read on and find out the things you need to avoid with your gas reward card.

Inaccessible gas station affiliates.

As we’ve said at the beginning of this article, you’ll have to make sure that your gas reward credit card is affiliated with your preferred gasoline station. Otherwise, your credit card won’t be of much use to you at all. Is the affiliate gas station easily accessible to you? Or do you need to drive out of your way just to refuel? Remember, on some cards you only earn your rebates each time you charge your fuel purchases from the affiliated gas station.

Vague terms and conditions.

Are the terms about earning gas rebates and redeeming your rewards stipulated clearly in your credit card agreement? Or are there some phrases or statements that are somewhat vague or indistinct? Pay special attention to the asterisks that are found at the end of what seems to be a great offer. Often times, there are certain conditions before you can enjoy that offer. For instance, if the ad says you get 5% rebates on gas purchases*- the term “gas purchases” may be limited to only one particular gas station branch and not on all gas purchases. Make sure that you are clearly aware of what you’re signing up for by reading the fine print of your gas reward credit card agreement.

Delaying your monthly payments.

Reward credit cards are often strict about implementing the rules. Gas reward credit cards are no different. If you fail to submit your monthly payment by your due date, chances are, you forfeit your eligibility to earn our rewards. This is a crucial tip for every reward credit card holder. Pay close attention to your payment due dates to make sure that you’ll get the rewards you deserve.

Deceptive Promotional offers.

Watch out for what seems to be the best deal you ever heard! Promotional offers are always great but don’t forget that these offers don’t last very long. Also, promos are offered just to get you to sign up for the card. Don’t forget to check if there’s a catch. For instance, the 5% gas rebate may just be limited to your first month, afterwards it may drop to a low 1% or even less. The low interest rate may be good for the first 3 months, but how much will it be after the introductory period expires? Don’t be stuck with a gas reward credit card that doesn’t do much for you. Read the full terms and conditions to know the exact implications of the promos being offered.

Need For Real Time Metrics Of The Oil Exploration Efforts

]]>

Key metrics is important for the oil and gas exploration companies worldwide. In order to reach the proper strategic decisions to what exploration efforts should be performed and where they should be initiated and continued, or even discontinued has become a very dynamic decision.

More complicated exploration efforts together with more data from various sources within the company demand a more visual effort to enable use of these data in an analytical purpose.

Decisions need to be taken at all levels of the company which will have major effect upon the performance of the company, therefore the involvement from more people is needed now than before.

In this article the author will cover some aspect that are important to cover whenever the oil and gas exploration company wants to create key metrics for its operations.

Business intelligence has had and still has many faces. Today Business intelligence is known as business performance management system (BPMS) and has evolved into Key Performance Indicators (KPI). These systems were usually restricted to the the chief financial officer (CFO), Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Boards of an oil and gas exploration company. The intelligence data and their systems were opened gradually to the E&P management, accountants and financial analysts. The purpose of collecting business intelligence data and to incorporate performance management systems is to be more efficient in handling resources, reduce cost and augment return on investment. Expansion and larger complexities in the oil companies’ increase the demands for integrate analytical data from operations, data handling and financial areas.

More professionals within the company are in demand of greater access to these data. Business intelligence has now become a driving force in most majors’ international and national oil and gas exploration companies. Today these systems are called the oil and gas exploration metrics.

Using Key Performance Indicators to perform metrics on its oil and gas exploration activities and portfolio is not a static tool, but evolves as companies’ activities and processes evolve.

The principles behind the metric for oil and gas exploration are basically the same as those used in traditional business intelligence tools. The major difference is found on the presentation side. As the company grows, its volume of data also expands, so data like power computation and surveillance instrumentation need to be processed efficiently and intuitively using cost effective visualization techniques. These visuals will then become available not only to accountants, CFOs, CEOs and financial analysts but also to operators, geoscientists and engineers. Everyone play an important role in an oil exploration venture and demands that everyone should be given access to these overwhelming yet critical data. The clue is not only to grant access to these data, but to be able to perform key messages through a thorough analytical process which the oil and gas exploration metrics can provide.

The metrics for oil exploration today covers more than just the financial side of the companies’ oil and gas exploration activities. There are essentially three major contributing factors that will lead a company to produce more oil and spend fewer resources be it financial or non-financial. These factors are constant troubleshooting on upstream assets, monitoring and incessant production planning. Oil exploration demands real time visualization and monitoring of operation that will help key persons in fast decision-making and analysis. Oil exploration becomes more remote and more challenging. Data from different geographic locations and multiple professional disciplines need to be processed fast and accurate.

There are generally three areas where metrics are important in an oil and gas exploration project:

Evaluation cost versus success rate of exploration wells
costs and expenses
revenue and realization
production

Key indicators for the evaluation cost versus success rate would be:

contribution to company reserve database according to company business plan
maintaining a unrisked and risked portfolio volume, risk profile versus volumes and diversity
success rate versus evaluation cost per exploration boe
consistency in main risk assessment versus actual reasons for failure
consistency in post drill full field potentials versus most likely assessed prospect volumes

Key indicators for the costs and expenses are:

ad valorem taxes
lease operating costs
work over costs per boe
lifting costs per boe
lifting costs

This aspect has the least number of metrics however tracing the cost of the operation is just as important as tracing how profitable the exploration is.

Key indicators and metrics for the revenue and realization aspect that indicate good and bad performance are:

profit – boe
oil per barrel
gas per $ Mcf
net processing income
lease income
oil sales
gas sales

Metrics for production are:

well downtime
water cut
well tests
well head pressure
gas oil ratio
liquids yield
water produced
overall daily and monthly oil production

The impact and importance of oil exploration metrics have dramatically improved over the last few years. No longer will engineers and accountants wait for weeks to analyze and come up with good decisions. With these metrics, analysis of engineering and financial data is now made real time.

Success of any metric systems is dependant upon how the data is made available to the various users, and also how these data are entered into the databases.

In order to make any financial impact, there needs to be a focus on the technical metrics, and what parameters should be used in the oil and gas exploration company.

Therefore there should be made an effort to map out the metric parameters as well as mapping out inter-departmental as well as intra-departmental workflows within an exploration company.

Therefore the structure and transparency of the database containing all the data to be performed visual analytics on needs to be in order before any efforts are tried to make key metrics for the company. Most of the times, this aspect is neglected at a major cost to the company and also the lack of ability to measure its key performance indicators set out.

The author Stig-Arne Kristoffersen, has more than 20 years experience within oil and gas exploration and production. He has worked for various major national and international oil and gas companies around the world. For more details about author and his work, you can go to www.ec-ba.com. You are also welcome to contact him at sak@ec-ba.com.

The author is more than happy to assist companies in efforts to create or refine its key metrics for their exploration efforts.

Linking Enterprise Effects To Employees Efficiency

It is not uncommon for managers and laborers to state functionality in unique ways. A lot of directors identify productiveness relating to results-increased end result, far greater value, lowered fees, and better sales revenue. Numerous staff identify efficiency like participating in work each day, merely appearing on time, producing a great mindset, and performing hard; although the majority of these can happen in the style of consequences supervisors search for, they aren’t related to outcomes

UKRAINE TRY TO ATTRACT OIL AND GAS INVESTORS – BUT LACK INFRASTRUCTURE TO DO SO

Ukraine has a long history of oil and gas exploration and production. Even up to the 19th century, Ukraine played an important role in Soviet oil and gas production, before the Siberian oil and gas fields made their entry. What has happened to Ukraine oil and gas industry since then? Even in the 20th century, the oil and gas industry of Ukraine stood still and even retracted somewhat. In the 21st century after the breakup of Soviet state, Ukraine became independent in 1991. Revive the industry?

Satellite Remote Sensing has been a standard first step for the mineral and petroleum exploration industry. Satellite imagery from satellite sensors such as GeoEye-1, WorldView-2, QuickBird, IKONOS, ASTER and LANDSAT 7 +ETM have benefited geologists, scientists and exploration managers in earth sciences due to the advantage of large scale mapping and the sensors containing multiple band colors which allows them to interpret wavelengths that cannot be seen by the human eye, such as near infrared, short wave infrared and thermal infrared to identify the difference in structural features of the earth’s surface.

Multispectral imaging and thematic mapping allows researchers to collect data of reflection and absorption properties of soils, rock, and vegetation. This data could be utilized to interpret actual surface lithology to identify clays, oxides and soils from satellite images.

The use of satellite imagery in mineral exploration, generally a combination of panchromatic and multispectral image data has been used in mineral and petroleum industries over the last decade. With higher resolution satellite sensors increasing over the last decade such as GeoEye-1 (0.41m) and WorldView-2 (0.46m) both providing panchromatic and multispectral full color imagery that is used to utilize enhanced spectral analysis for mapping, monitoring and analyzing landcover classification and extraction of culture data, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) classification and mapping, lithological classification, change detection, environmental monitoring, development, land-use planning, visualization and simulation environments such as digital elevation models (DEMs) and 3d terrain modeling.

ASTER (15m) Satellite Images of Escondida open-pit mine in Atacama Desert, Chile

Geologists and Geoscientists have used satellite images to serve as databases from which they can do the following:

* Pick out rock units (stratigraphy)
* Study the expression and modes of the origin of landforms (geomorphology)
* Determine the structural arrangements of disturbed strata (folds and faults)
* Evaluate dynamic changes from natural events (e.g., floods; volcanic eruptions)
* Seek surface clues (such as alteration and other signs of mineralization) to subsurface deposits of ore minerals, oil and gas, and groundwater.
* Function as a visual base on which a geologic map is drawn either directly or on a transparent overlay.

A well collated and structured data base integrated into a powerful GIS project can be used to collect and create valuable data for the planning and exploration program for:

1. The advantage of creating large scale area maps which allows them to examine in single scenes or in mosaics the geological portrayal of Earth on a regional basis.
2. The ability to analyze multispectral bands quantitatively in terms of numbers permits them to apply special image processing techniques to discern and enhance certain compositional properties of Earth materials.
3. The capability of merging different types of remote sensing products (e.g., reflectance images with radar or with thermal imagery) or combining these with topographic elevation data (DEMs) and with other kinds of information bases (e.g., thematic maps; geophysical measurements and chemical sampling surveys) enables views of existing or planning of proposed mines.
4. Mapping subregional surface geology.
5. Creating field exploration maps with detailed views of access roads.

ASTER Satellite Image of Argyle Diamond Mine, Australia- DEM

Remote sensed data and GIS for mineral exploration is a key to management, planning and monitoring programs requiring on accurate information about the land cover in a region. Methods for monitoring vegetation and land change range from intensive field sampling with plot inventories to extensive analysis of remotely sensed data which has proven to be more cost effective for large regions, small site assessment and analysis.

Resource:

Satellite Imaging Corporation provides high resolution satellite imagery from satellite sensors such as GeoEye-1, WorldView-2 Worldview-1, QuickBird, IKONOS, SPOT-5 and other remote sensing products for analysis and mapping applications such as Geographic Information System (GIS).

The company specializes in mono and stereo satellite image processing techniques and produce seamless orthorectified satellite imaging mosaic DEM’s and 3D terrain models for many industries using GIS applications including, flight simulations and terrain modeling for your specific project needs.

The Environment: Is Our Dissociation Destroying It?

We live in a time where there is intense focus and even an obsession when it comes to our environment. In many ways, I believe that this is a good thing. The questions that arise for me are; what causes us to act in ways that are so destructive to the environment? .And at the same time, why is it that we only seem to care about our environment, now that it is in such a precarious position. This is a position, which has been described by many, as the point of no return.

If you are interested in oil and gas investing there are three primary ways you can go about starting your investment. These ways include investing in companies, mutual funds, and commodities. You can make a lot of money in this industry if you are smart about your investments.

Investors consider gas investments to be safe. This is because there are so many ways that someone can invest their money in the industry. You are not limited to only buying stock in a business but there are so many other ways to invest too. It is easy to diversify your portfolio of investments with only oil and gas in the many different ways you can invest.

The primary way to take advantage of oil investments is through company stock. If you find a drilling company that you want to invest in because you believe they will strike oil some time soon you can purchase their stocks. There are tons of companies out there who drill for oil. There are independent companies and medium-sized businesses and more. It is important to know that stock with gas investments does not always provide the largest return on investment.

Mutual funds that have a primary focus on energy is another way you can look at oil and gas investing. A mutual fund in this field may focus on the oil and gas but have stock in many companies in the field. This fund may include large companies and independent companies too. One type of a mutual fund is a drilling fund. This is broken down into two fields; exploratory and developmental drilling. Exploratory drilling is as the name suggests, exploring to find oil and gas. Developmental drilling uses wells that already exist. It monitors the development and production limits.

Gas investments can also include commodities. This includes things like royalty funds, leas acquisition funds, and even combination funds. There are many ways commodities are offered for investments in the oil and gas industry.

There are many ways you can invest in the oil and gas industry. If you are interested in oil and gas investments you should consider looking into the different methods. You can invest your money in company stock, mutual funds, and even commodities. Some investors make a huge amount of profit and some don’t. Any type of investing is risky so you should do plenty of research before you do anything with your investment.

A Week In The Life Of An Oil Soaked Pelican!

Edit Article |

]]>

Picture yourself standing on the beach gazing at the most beautiful sunset you have ever seen. Suddenly, just a stone’s throw from where you are standing, a pelican in flight becomes silhouetted against the backdrop of the orange ball of the sun. It’s an image that will forever give you peace on those random occasions when it comes to mind.

Now see that same sun and the same beach with another pelican being chased over the water by three men in a boat. They’re trying to help, not hurt the bird, but it doesn’t know that. It just knows that something is terribly wrong!

Its wings won’t lift it out of the water. The best it can do is skip over the waves like Jesus running on the water. Its body is covered with heavy red-brown oil that is holding it down. Finally the weary bird quits running and resigns itself to whatever the humans have in mind.

The Pelican’s story begins with the gigantic oil leak by the Deep Water Horizon, a drill platform in the Gulf of Mexico about 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana, owned by British Petroleum. Millions of gallons of oil have leaked from a pipe in the bottom of the gulf and despite the best rhetoric by politicians and oil men alike, no end to this crisis appears to be in sight.

Maybe this single rescued animal is one of the lucky birds. According to experts though, less than one percent of seabirds rescued from the sticky, smelly oil will survive the ordeal. Here’s how it will go for the bird.

Day One: If it’s lucky enough to survive being caught by the men chasing it with a huge dip net, it is put in a cage on the boat and at day’s end, all the birds collected that day are taken to a rescue center. Here they are sequestered for up to two days while they hopefully settle down from their experience and are checked for infections and injuries.
Generally the birds are too weak to eat and have to be fed fluids through IV’s.

Day Three: The cleansing begins with the pelican being sprayed with a lubricant, usually a canola oil or a mayonnaise based mixture to loosen the oil and grime that is covering birds that have survived the holding period.

Now the washing begins. A diluted form of Dawn Dishwashing Liquid seems to be the detergent of choice for removing the oil from the feathers. The unfortunate bird has to be repeatedly and thoroughly rinsed to ensure that all of the soap has been washed away. Even a small amount of detergent can interfere with the natural oils of the feathers.

Day Four- Six: After thorough rinsings, the Pelican is sent to the grooming room where it is either warmed by a series of lights or pampered with a hair dryer. Then it is sent to another holding area with pelicans which have been through the same treatment. There it is watched for a couple of days to make sure it is well and natural waterproofing is returning to its feathers.
Pelicans and other sea birds that survive all this are farther traumatized by being transported to the Sun Coast Seabird Sanctuary in Indian shores, Florida.

Presumably this is far enough away from the oil spill to be a safe haven for the pelicans. Many of these rescued birds though, miss their home grounds and try to fly back to familiar territory. Some make it back to the oil covered waters of the gulf.

All this is a very simplified version of the rescue attempts to save oil drenched seabirds. Their survival depends on how long they were exposed to the mess, the bird’s age and physical condition at the time of exposure.

Unfortunately, only a few out of the thousands of birds from Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida and Alabama will be saved. Of those rescued, less than one percent will survive the oil and the stress of their rescue. Such a loss for us all!

Genetically Modified Foods — Americans Should Be Very Concerned

Genetically modified foods, or genetically modified organisms (GMO’S) are now a very real part of your diet whether you know it or not. If you eat corn, cornmeal, cornstarch, corn oil or other corn based ingredients, soybeans, soy milk, tofu, soybean oil, and other soybean based products, canola oil, cottonseed oil, sugar beets, papaya from Hawaii, and some zucchini, and yellow squash, then genetically modified foods are making up a significant percentage of your overall food consumption.

Oil Prices On The Rise As Supply Cannot Keep Up With Demand From Emerging Nations

Edit Article |

]]>

Oil prices are on the rise as demand for oil is steadily rising and there is not any halt in sight. Demand for oil is increasing in China, India and other emerging economies.

The International Energy Agency is predicting that global oil use will grow by 1.8% to 85.5m barrels a day in 2010. Analysts are anticipating a rise in the price of oil in the – a barrel range in the second part of 2010. This rise in price is a 31% increase than originally estimated.

With China reporting expected growth of around 8%, oil prices may skyrocket as China is the largest consumer of oil after the U.S. As China begins to consume even more, the demand for oil will rise and as China accounts for about one-third of global oil demand growth, and that demand is not expected to slow.

Due to growing consumption in China, India and Brazil the predicted global demand is set to accelerate to 86.4 million barrels a day, up from 84.9mb/day in 2009. With dwindling production in the world’s biggest oilfields, it is predicted that supply will fail to meet demand in 2010. This lack of supply will likely boost oil to /barrel this year and 0 in 2011.

As the population and economy in not only the U.S., but in emerging nations such as China and India continues to grow, the consensus among most analysts and agencies such as the IEA is that oil consumption will rise this year and as the demand increases, prices will soar as supply is limited.
